A recovered material, not a performance grade
Down consists of soft, branching clusters; feathers have a shaft and a different structure. A recycled filling may contain both, so a product name alone cannot establish its composition. The specification should identify the components and the method used to measure them.
Recycled describes the input history. It does not by itself tell a buyer the species, color, fill power, cleanliness or fitness for a particular product. Those are separate procurement questions.
Where recovered inputs come from
Used bedding and garments can provide post-consumer filling. Qualifying material diverted from manufacturing can be pre-consumer input. Input eligibility and evidence must be assessed under the applicable recycled standard; not all factory rework is automatically eligible.
Recovered products are sorted, filling is extracted, and the material is separated, washed, treated and dried before quality assessment. Processing conditions and output specifications depend on the input and the approved production route.
What a buyer should verify
| Question | Evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Is it recycled? | Input records and applicable chain-of-custody documentation. |
| Will it perform? | Composition, fill power method and application sample. |
| Is the claim covered? | Current certification scope and order-specific documents. |
| Can the lot be traced? | Lot identity linked to processing, packing and reports. |
Start with the end product
A jacket needs a material that works with its shell, baffle design and weight budget. A pillow needs a filling that meets support and comfort requirements. There is no single recycled-down grade that fits every application. Prepare a brief with your destination market and approval criteria before choosing a blend.
